5 Ways to Have a Fit & Active Vacay w/o a Hotel Workout
April 11, 2017
Girl, you gotta live. If you're going for a balanced lifestyle, you know that you have to make health & fitness a priority but you always have to #livealittle! My favorite way to do this is travel. No matter where the trip or what I'm doing, to travel gives me energy and new perspectives. Of course, my favorite part of any trip is usually all the wonderful food. In order to make sure I can enjoy everything with peace of mind and stay on track with my workouts, I make it a point to actually build my fitness and activity into the trip! I love choosing chic, nice hotels, I like to sleep in style 😎, but I absolutely DO NOT want to spend my whole vacation inside the hotel working out! 🙅🏾 No way. My last visit to LA is a perfect example of how a relaxing, indulgent vacay can be just as fit as it is fun, while exploring your destination. Keep reading for 5 ways to ditch the hotel workout!
1) LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Going back to picking a nice hotel... I also make it a point to select a hotel in a nice area with a walkable district. In LA I stayed in Westwood, Beverly Grove, an area off west 3rd & Venice Beach. Each hotel offered access to a huge variety of restaurants, pressed juiceries, cafes & boutiques.
Each location made it super easy to enjoy the best of both worlds. When you can visit so many good local eateries (and of course some super cute photo ops) , AND hit your 10,000 steps goal...you're staying in the right place!
They say, "the best way to explore the world is by foot." so...get to steppin!
2) TAKE A HIKE!
Literally. Hiking is one of my favorite ways to explore a new destination and truly experience its scenery and nature. LA has no shortage of hikes offering varying degrees of difficulties and panoramic views of the city, coast and mountains (best of allllll worlds).
This trip featured a Temescal Canyon hike. This 3 mile loop trail located near Pacific Palisades, features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels, which is why you'll find a good amount of hikers taking the trail year around.
The 860 ft elevation gain is enough to get your legs burning & your heart rate up! If you're a little winded on the way to the top, there are a couple scenic outlooks, perfect for a quick breather and photo opp. You definitely want to push your way to the top because the #views are soooo worth it!
3) TAKE IT INSIDE...
Thats a rarity for me but sometimes (depending on the weather or just to change it up) you gotta balance a day inside but still keep your body moving. Visiting a Museum is the perfect way to avoid hot or cold weather, experience the local culture, & make major #gainz toward your step goal!
The Getty Villa Museum offers the best of both worlds as far as an "indoor/outdoor" day at the museum goes. Make sure your fitbit/apple watch is charged and ready to go so you can track all your steps as you peruse the indoor gallery and the beautiful gardens.
And if you're feeling real bold...you can run a few stadiums...ya know...just for fun 😜
4) BEACH IS BETTER
Obvi and always. Of course, one of the biggest draws for a LA vacay is the beach! With so many to choose from you're sure to find a beach with the right vibe for you. I'd recommend a trip to Zuma beach if you want something chill and beautiful (not to mention you can wander around the amazing Pepperdine campus, since its right across the road from the beach!).
Or, you can spend the day at the lively Venice Beach, with all the muscle men, graffiti artist and local sites/attractions. Take your beach stroll up a notch by leaving the paved boardwalk and trekking through the sand. The extra resistance and malleable surface will get your legs fired up!
And of course, whats at the beach without a little water action. You don't have to head out into the surf to get a workout, just a solo dance party in the water will do :)
5) LIVE LIKE A LOCAL
Most cities, especially popular destination cities, often have a calendar of events that include festivals, parades, & and community activities like a group bike ride or walk. This may be the perfect way to again, experience your destination and its culture from a new perspective; by foot and as one of the locals. You'll get a chance to mix and mingle with the people who can really tell you the best resturantes in town and the hidden gems to visit. On top of that, many of the community events will provide a way for you to be active and moving, or at least, you'll be outdoors and you can totally bust out a few squats and and a plank or two 😜. At the end of the day, if you can't find any other way to get in a little activity on your vacation, just remember that laughing & dancing burn a ton of calories. Smile, live life & enjoy. ✨
